Redis Ltd. (originally Redis Labs, Garantia Data) is an American private computer software company headquartered in Mountain View, California. History

Redis Ltd was founded under the name Garantia Datacite-ref-techcrunch-5-6-0[6] in 2011 by Ofer Bengal, previously the founder and CEO of RiT Technologies, and Yiftach Shoolman, previously the founder and president of Crescendo Networks, acquired by F5 Networks.cite-ref-451-research-7-0[7]cite-ref-globes-8-0[8]

In June 2012, the company announced a beta version of its cloud services at GigaOm's Structure LaunchPad.cite-ref-devops-9-0[9]cite-ref-venturebeat-1-10-0[10] Redis Enterprise Cloud became generally available in February 2013.cite-ref-varguy-11-0[11]cite-ref-vmblog-12-0[12]

In October 2013, Garantia Data acquired MyRedis, a competing hosted Redis provider.cite-ref-wired-13-0[13] On January 29, 2014, the company changed its name from Garantia Data to Redis Labs.cite-ref-techcrunch-5-6-1[6]

In early 2015, Redis Labs made available the Redis Enterprise Pack.cite-ref-aws-reinvent-2015-14-0[14] On July 15, 2015, the creator of Redis and lead developer, Salvatore Sanfilippo, joined Redis Labs and they became the official sponsor of the open source project.cite-ref-network-world-201507-15-0[15]

In May 2016, the company announced a mechanism for developers to extend Redis,cite-ref-techtarget-adrianbridgewater-16-0[16] and opened an online marketplace that offers modules certified to work with both open source Redis and Redis' Enterprise products.cite-ref-vb-jordannovet-17-0[17]

In August 2018, the company changed the license of its Redis modules from AGPL to Apache2 modified with Commons Clause.cite-ref-18[18]

In February 2019, the company changed the license of Redis modules to Redis Source Available License (RSAL).cite-ref-19[19]

In April 2019, the company acquired RDBTools, a graphical user interface (GUI) to manage Redis from HashedIn.cite-ref-open-source-20-0[20] Later in the year the company launched the tool as RedisInsight with expanded capabilities to visualize data in Redis modules.cite-ref-open-source-20-1[20]

Salvatore Sanfilippo stepped down as Redis's lead maintainer in the end of June 2020, leaving the project in the hands of Redis Labs.cite-ref-21[21] On August 11, 2021, the company changed its name from Redis Labs to Redis, having acquired the intellectual property and trademark rights to Redis from Sanfilippo back in 2018.cite-ref-22[22]

On March 20, 2024, the company went back on its promise of keeping the 3-clause BSD licensecite-ref-23[23] and switched the open-source Redis project to a source-available license model.cite-ref-24[24]

Funding

The company secured $4 million in seed funding from angel investors in August 2012,cite-ref-dowjones-29-0[29] an additional $9 million in series A funding led by Bain Capital Ventures and Carmel Ventures (now known as Viola Ventures),cite-ref-globes-8-1[8]cite-ref-techcrunch-30-0[30] an additional $15m in Series B funding led by the existing investors and Silicon Valley Bank,cite-ref-31[31] and an additional $14 million in series C funding led by the same investors.cite-ref-techcrunch-14m-32-0[32] In August 2017 it raised $44 million in series D funding led by Goldman Sachs Private Capital Investing, and in February 2019 $60 million in series E funding led by Francisco Partners with participation by existing investors.cite-ref-33[33]cite-ref-34[34] Series F funding was concluded in August 2020 raising another $100 million, with TCV joining as a new investor in the company.cite-ref-35[35] Another $110 million was raised in April 2021 and two new investors joined the company as part of Series G round, which was led by Tiger Global, with participation from SoftBank Vision Fund 2.cite-ref-36[36] Redis has raised a net amount of $347 million in funding to-date.cite-ref-37[37]
